So this past weekend I grabbed the first book in the Horus Heresy series, Horus Rising, by Dan Abnett. I'm only a couple hundred pages in, but I have to say, Abnett's ability to grab the reader is amazing. It's no wonder Dan is the man when it comes to the 40k universe. This is the first book I've read of his and it's quickly becoming my favorite. The wheels area already turning for a Chaos Legion army once Skaven and Space Wolves are done. I know, I'm terrible when it comes to staying focused, but with Origins and Gencon looming in the distance, hopefully I can set my mind to the task at hand, which is 4Kish worth of Skaven..
Anyway, back to the book. The main character of the book is this dude Garviel Loken, who is commander of the Tenth Company. The book opens with some awesome killing and battle scenes, and does a good job of painting the feeling of how life was for the Astartes during the Great Crusade. Without ruining the book, through some deeds done, Loken get's promoted to Horus's private council. I've just got to that point of the book, and Loken is about to under go his first task as a member of that council. I'm looking forward to the remainder of the book, and the series in general!
